LANAP® Recovery Guide: How to Heal Comfortably After Laser Gum Treatment

Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP for short) is a minimally invasive treatment designed to help restore gum health and encourage natural tissue regeneration. Our team is committed to helping you enjoy a smooth, successful recovery after LANAP in Monterey Bay.

Even though healing is generally easier than with conventional gum surgery, proper aftercare plays an essential role in protecting your results and ensuring successful healing. This convenient laser gum treatment recovery guide gives you everything you’ll need to get the best possible results.

What to Expect After LANAP Treatment

It’s common to experience several mild symptoms as your gums begin to heal. These may include:

  • Mild to moderate gum tenderness
  • Light bleeding or slight oozing during the first 24-48 hours
  • Swelling or a feeling of tightness around the gums
  • Temporary tooth sensitivity
  • Teeth that feel slightly mobile or “loose”
  • A temporary change in taste from prescription mouth rinse

Most of these symptoms gradually improve within the first one to two weeks as healing progresses.

Changes to Your Gums After LANAP

You may also notice a white or cream-colored material around the treated gums. This is completely normal and should not be disturbed. The material is called a fibrin clot, which protects the area and supports the body’s natural healing response.

Additionally, the gum tissue may appear slightly discolored, uneven, or “stringy.” These changes are a normal part of tissue regeneration.

However, if you notice severe discomfort, worsening symptoms, or anything that seems unusual, contact our office right away.

Reducing Discomfort and Swelling

Laser gum therapy is significantly more comfortable than traditional surgical approaches, but you may experience some discomfort immediately following the procedure. To stay comfortable while healing:

  • Take prescribed or recommended pain medication exactly as directed.
  • Avoid aspirin unless approved by your dentist, since it may increase bleeding.
  • Use a cold compress on the outside of your face for 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off during the first 24 hours if swelling occurs.
  • Rest and limit physical activity for the first 24–48 hours.

Oral Hygiene Guidelines After LANAP

Keeping your mouth clean is important, but the treated area needs time to stabilize before normal brushing and flossing resume.

Weeks 1–2

During the early healing phase:

  • Do not brush or floss the treated areas unless specifically instructed.
  • Continue brushing untreated areas with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water (½ teaspoon salt in a cup of water) two to three times daily.
  • Use any prescribed antimicrobial mouth rinse exactly as directed.
  • Avoid mouthwashes that contain alcohol.
  • Do not rinse with hydrogen peroxide.

Weeks 3–4

As healing progresses, you may begin gently cleaning the treated teeth.

Use an ultra-soft toothbrush and follow a gentle rolling technique:

  1. Position the toothbrush bristles along the gumline.
  2. Lightly roll the bristles away from the gums toward the chewing surface.
  3. Avoid scrubbing and use very light pressure.

Flossing may be reintroduced cautiously, but keep the floss above the gumline unless directed otherwise.

Weeks 4–6

  • Continue gentle brushing in the treated areas
  • Avoid aggressive brushing or scrubbing
  • Avoid using an oral irrigator (WaterPik) until your dentist confirms it is safe

If your healing is progressing normally, you may be able to start using an electric toothbrush again, but be sure to check with your doctor first!

Long-Term Gum Care

Maintaining your results depends on consistent oral hygiene and professional monitoring. To protect your gums:

  • Brush and floss daily as instructed
  • Attend regular periodontal maintenance visits
  • Follow personalized recommendations from your dental team

What to Eat After LANAP Gum Treatment

Diet plays an important role in protecting healing gum tissue.

First Three Days: Liquid Diet

During the initial healing period, consume foods with a liquid or blended consistency, such as:

  • Smoothies without berries, which have small seeds that can get stuck in the gums
  • Protein or nutritional drinks
  • Broth or creamed soups (be sure to let them cool first)
  • Blended foods

Important tips:

  • Do not use straws, as suction can disrupt healing.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Days 4–8: Soft “Mushy” Foods

After the first few days, you can start to incorporate foods that don’t require much chewing.

  • Oatmeal
  • Mashed potatoes or avocado
  • Steamed and mashed vegetables
  • Cottage cheese or soft cheeses
  • Eggs or omelets with soft ingredients
  • Yogurt, pudding, or gelatin desserts
  • Blended or mashed fruits (avoid seeds)
  • Creamy peanut butter
  • Nutritional shakes

For optimal healing, avoid:

  • Hard, crunchy, or chewy foods
  • Spicy or acidic dishes
  • Very hot or very cold foods
  • Shredded meats that may lodge under the gums
  • Fruits with small seeds

Days 8–10: Transition to a Soft Diet

Once the white healing material around your gums disappears, you may slowly begin introducing softer solid foods such as:

  • Pasta
  • Fish
  • Chicken
  • Soft cooked vegetables

The First Month of Healing

Even after soft foods are reintroduced, your gums will continue healing for several weeks.

During this time:

  • Chew carefully
  • Favor softer foods
  • Avoid placing heavy pressure on treated areas

Hydration and Beverage Guidelines During LANAP Recovery

Staying hydrated supports tissue repair and overall recovery.

Follow these recommendations:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Avoid straws until cleared by your dentist
  • Skip hot beverages for the first few days
  • Avoid alcohol for two weeks after treatment
  • Limit sugary drinks
  • Avoid carbonation for at least the first two days, preferably longer

Other Tips for Eating After Laser Gum Disease Treatment

A few simple habits can make healing smoother:

  • Eat slowly and take small bites
  • Avoid chewing directly on treated teeth initially
  • Choose foods that are soft and cool or room temperature
  • Ensure adequate protein intake to support tissue repair
  • Consider taking a multivitamin during recovery

Activity and Lifestyle Guidelines

Protecting the treated area during healing is essential.

For the best results:

  • Avoid intense physical activity for 24–48 hours
  • Do not smoke or vape, as this can significantly delay healing
  • Get plenty of rest
  • Avoid pressing on the treated area with your tongue or cheeks
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated during the first few nights
  • Avoid sleeping on your side if it puts pressure on the treatment site
  • Do not pull your lips or cheeks to check the gums
  • Try to avoid clenching or grinding your teeth

If you experience bruxism (teeth grinding), speak with your dentist before treatment so a protective plan can be created.

Follow-Up Care After LANAP in Monterey

Follow-up visits are a key part of successful periodontal therapy. At Monterey Peninsula Dental Group, your dental team will monitor gum regeneration and ensure healing is progressing properly.

Because brushing in the treated area is limited early on and prescription rinses can sometimes cause staining, we may recommend a brief follow-up cleaning about one month after treatment.

Contact our office right away if you experience:

  • Heavy or persistent bleeding
  • Pain that worsens after several days
  • Swelling that increases instead of improving
  • Fever or signs of infection
